I’m very impressed by Mark Cuban recently. Only days after reading a recent Wired article (that directly followed another maverick hero of mine — Robert Rodriguez) discussing Cuban’s imminent and self-financed upgrade of his Landmark theatre chains to digital projection, I just read a string of articles and a nicely-stated exposition on Cuban’s blog about his decision to fund the EFF in the Grokster vs. MGM case.
Here is a media giant who actually understands media. And apparently right and wrong as well. He’s basically calling the bluff of Hollywood, the RIAA, the MPAA on the fallacy of P2P and piracy. He’s defending the little guy, and he isn’t really a little guy at all. (What billionaire is?) This is one person who is smart enough to deserve to keep making his billions, because he fundamentally gets where technology is heading and what is actually going on in this brave new digital world.
More power to you, Mark. I wish there were more powerful billionaires like you out there.
And hey, when you get that theatre chain upgraded, let’s talk a bit about distributing some good indie films, can we?…
